The phrase “Spend your time wisely” has an interesting texture to it because, unlike time’s less profound but more popular cousin “money,” spending your time wisely does not speak to how much you spend of it nearly as much as it speaks to how you spend it, unlike money, time forces your hand.
What I mean by this is simply put: you have to spend time anyway, and as such emphasis moves from “whether or not” to “where and how.”
Since we are blowing through time like there’s no tomorrow anyway, “what does spending my time wisely mean” seems like a timely question to ask.
And a further question, what is a good return on time spent?” I mean think about it: time spent wisely won’t produce more time necessarily, so how do we gauge it? Some of my favourite answers for time well spent include joy, happiness, connection, peace, and therefore life behooves us to ask ourselves what can we spend our time on today that gives us more of these things.
A prime creative example: like most of us I work full time, and I have resolved to spend much of the little free time I do have writing in hopes that in due time it will afford me the freedom to write more.
This only makes any sense to me because whether the time I do spend writing grants me the success to do more of it or not, I know that I spent the little time I did have doing something I love immensely. You get it ? it’s like gotta spend it anyway, write ?
what’s your “ gotta spend it anyway ?”
